Ivory Coast: Craftsmanship, an economic pillar to be structured to enhance its performance

A sector of undeniable vitality, Ivorian craftsmanship today positions itself as an essential lever of the national economy. Contributing 19.5% to GDP in 2022, it has seen its added value increase by 124% over seven years, rising from 3,855.7 billion CFA francs in 2015 to 8,653.5 billion CFA francs in 2022. This dynamism attests to the structuring role of this sector, rich in traditions and promising job prospects.

Speaking at the weekly forum "Everything You Need to Know" (TSS) of the Government Information and Communication Center (CICG), Mr. Yao Silvère Konan, Director General of SME and Craft Promotion, urged stakeholders in this sector to formalize their activities. This process, mandated by the 2014 law, requires registration in the Trades Register, a prerequisite to benefit from the various support mechanisms established by the State.

Indeed, compliant artisans can seek support funds through the Youth Employment Agency or the GUDE-PME, thereby enhancing their production capacities and competitiveness.

As a reminder, Ivorian craftsmanship encompasses 245 trades, grouped into eight major activity branches: agri-food, construction, metals and mechanics, wood and furniture, textiles and leather, audiovisual and communication, hygiene and personal care, as well as arts and decoration. Although predominantly male, the sector includes 22.5% women, highlighting the need for greater inclusion of female artisans.

Aware of the strategic importance of this sector, the Government has made its promotion a priority in successive National Development Plans (2012-2015, 2016-2020, and 2021-2025). This proactive policy aims to further structure the craft sector, modernize it, and promote its visibility at the regional and international levels.

Beyond formalization, the challenge now lies in integrating new technologies and accessing digital markets, which are essential for sustainable and inclusive growth for this emblematic sector of Ivorian economic and cultural identity.
