Agreements and Conventions

 

Ivory Coast and Togo are founding member states of the Conseil de l’Entente, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). They have maintained privileged relations since their independence.

Several friendship visits have taken place between the two countries, including:

  • January 2019: Friendship and working visit of President Faure Gnassingbé to Ivory Coast.

  • April 3, 2018: Friendship and working visit of President Faure Gnassingbé to Ivory Coast.

  • November 20, 2017: Friendship and working visit of President Faure Gnassingbé to Ivory Coast.

  • August 29, 2015: Working visit of President Alassane Ouattara to Togo.

At the conclusion of the friendship and working visit on February 16, 2015, three bilateral agreements were signed:

  1. Agreement on the creation of a High Joint Commission for cooperation.

  2. Agreement on the creation of a Joint Committee to follow up and evaluate the decisions and recommendations of the High Joint Commission.

  3. Memorandum of Understanding on regular political consultations between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs.

It is also notable that Togo played a crucial role in mediation for the resolution of the 2002 crisis in Ivory Coast.

A. Main Exports from Ivory Coast to Togo: mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous materials; mineral waxes; essential oils and resinoids; perfumes or toilet preparations and cosmetics; plastic materials and works in these materials; other manufactured textile articles; assortments; second-hand clothing and rags; soaps and organic surface-active agents, laundry preparations.

B. Main Imports from Togo to Ivory Coast: mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous materials; sugars and confectionery; mineral waxes; pharmaceutical products; plastic materials and works in these materials.

  • Over the period from 2019 to 2023, the average value of Ivorian exports is estimated at 122.8 billion FCFA per year, compared to 94.28 billion FCFA per year for imports.

  • The trade balance is surplus in favor of Ivory Coast during the period 2019-2021, 2023, and is in deficit in 2022.
