Cooperation between the two countries primarily takes place through international organizations to which both are signatories, notably the United Nations (UN).
Chile is an associated country of the South American economic community, Mercosur, which brings together several countries in the region.
Trade relations between Mercosur and African countries, which were relatively insignificant until recently, have begun to intensify in recent years. Initially focused primarily on Egypt and South Africa, the union is increasingly establishing trade relations with sub-Saharan African countries, notably Nigeria, Ghana, Libya, Senegal, and Angola.
Furthermore, on June 19, 2017, during a roundtable organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, under the theme "Mining for Development - Leveraging Chilean Experience for Africa," both Africa and Chile expressed their desire to establish a mutually beneficial South-South cooperation, particularly in the field of mining. Chile, in fact, has vast experience in this sector and accounts for about 30% of the world's copper supply.
